Studio notes: a new chapter for Field Grey

14.07.2025

Over the years, Field Grey has worked in some wonderful spaces – some more spacious than others!

We’ve gone from desk shares with no heating to grown-up offices next to Jamie Oliver HQ. Each move has marked a new chapter for Field Grey, and now we’re on the cusp of another exciting one.

Our very first office was a single desk on Redchurch Street, heated (just about) by an old oil radiator I used to wheel under my legs – warm knees, freezing shoulders! We moved next to a tiny room on Hoxton Street, eventually expanding next door until we outgrew the space.

From there, we headed north to Highbury and Benwell Studios. It felt like a real step up for Field Grey. Our neighbours included production companies and Jamie Oliver’s HQ – we’d often wave to Jamie as we arrived in the morning.

Then Covid hit and we downsized to our current space at Canonbury Yard, which we’ve loved. But the pandemic changed things. It proved that remote collaboration can work brilliantly when done right. As overheads rise, we’ve been rethinking what we truly need from a studio.

That’s why we’re creating a new kind of workspace – a flexible, purpose-built studio that acts as a creative hub. Not everyone will be in every day, but it will be there when we need it: for collaboration, design reviews, project work and good old fashioned catch-ups.

The design will echo my home extension

The new studio is being built off-site by the brilliant Toby Mower, who we’ve collaborated with before — he designed our stand for the London Design Fair back in 2017, and you might have seen the basement studio he built for DJ Gilles Peterson on Instagram.

And here’s the twist: our new studio will be in my back garden, in sunny Walthamstow.

Think Scandinavian materials, steel shutters and clever, modular design. Inspired by my home’s rubber-coated extension, designed by Office S&M — which has been featured by The Modern House Journal and Dezeen — the studio will include:

• Big windows for natural light
• Purpose-built storage for boxes and samples
• Flexible workspace with project tables
• A small kitchen area
• Magnetic panels for pinning up ideas
• A screen for presentations and client calls

There are still design decisions to be made and samples to sift through. But we’re getting there.

The studio build has already kicked off, and we’ll be sharing the journey: from inspiration and design sketches to our farewell to Canonbury and, finally, the big reveal in September. A video is also on the way, where I talk through the vision behind the space.

We’re excited to start this next chapter in the Field Grey story and we hope you’ll join us for the ride.
