She studied at Canterbury College of Art and then the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rca.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">RCA<\/a> in the mid-1950s. Tom Worthington, the artistic director of Heal Fabrics, talent spotted Brown at her degree show and commissioned new designs. Her first fabric, Sweet Corn (below), was produced in 1958. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.field-grey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/BarbaraBrown_Whitworth_MattBramford_02.jpg\" alt=\"BarbaraBrown_Whitworth_MattBramford_02\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10026\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.field-grey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/BarbaraBrown_Whitworth_MattBramford_02.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.field-grey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/BarbaraBrown_Whitworth_MattBramford_02-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Brown produced a host of stunning textiles designs, many of which are on display at The Whitworth. They&#8217;re shown alongside ceramics and advertising material from the time of Brown&#8217;s designs. <\/p>\n<p>Brown used mathematical formulae to create optical illusions in a range of vivid colours. For seventeen years her designs were exclusively produced by Heal&#8217;s Fabrics. She avoided &#8216;prettiness&#8217; and designs that were twee; instead, she used abstract plant forms, geometric shapes and graphic repetitions. Highlights include <em>Caprice<\/em>, an early waterfall-like design with black ink printed onto white fabric; <em>Decor<\/em>, a heady design featuring vertical lines made out of varying-sized circles; and <em>Frequency<\/em>, featuring warped, wavy lines in tones of brown.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.field-grey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/BarbaraBrown_Whitworth_MattBramford_07.jpg\" alt=\"BarbaraBrown_Whitworth_MattBramford_07\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10038\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.field-grey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/BarbaraBrown_Whitworth_MattBramford_07.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.field-grey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/BarbaraBrown_Whitworth_MattBramford_07-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.field-grey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/BarbaraBrown_Whitworth_MattBramford_07-400x600.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One side of the gallery is devoted to Brown&#8217;s later monochrome work. These space age designs feature brutalist patterns and futuristic emblems with three-dimensional effects, showing the progress Brown made while designing for Heal&#8217;s. <\/p>\n<p>See our gallery of
