Five times hotel uniforms channelled the latest Wes Anderson film

13.05.2025

Cannes 2025 is officially rolling and Wes Anderson fans are in for a treat. His latest film The Phoenician Scheme is already tipped for the Palme d’Or. Set in the 1940s, it’s a globetrotting espionage caper starring Benicio del Toro and breakout star Mia Threapleton as an eccentric father-daughter duo trying to dodge disaster, rescue the family empire, and stay impeccably dressed throughout.

It’s peak Wes Anderson: pastel palette, symmetrical frames, lovingly curated score, offbeat humour – and costumes that feel tailor-made for Pinterest.

Naturally, we’ve spotted some familiar looks from the world of hotel uniforms…

1. Benicio del Toro’s safari jacket → Home Grown, London

Benicio’s character, Zsa-Zsa Korda, survives six plane crashes and still turns up looking dapper in a desert-toned safari jacket. Originally worn by British officers in the colonies, the look was reinvented in the ‘70s by Yves Saint Laurent and has been in and out of style (and the Sahara) ever since. Our Readywear Utility Jacket, which we customised for the staff at Home Grown members’ club, shares the same utilitarian spirit – practical, sharp and cool under pressure. Cocktails, not camel rides.

2. …and trousers → Amanzoe resort, Greece

Wes Anderson’s cast may not be checking anyone into a luxury retreat, but the relaxed safari trousers they wear would fit right in at Amanzoe, part of Aman Resorts group. Designed by Elina Kordali of Madame Shou Shou, their uniforms are all ease and elegance. Earthy tones, natural fabrics and a gentle nod to colonial styles (without the colonial baggage).

3. Michael Cera’s velvet blazer → Hilton Park Lane, London

Michael Cera makes his Wes Anderson film debut as Liesl’s curiously accented, curly mopped and round bespectacled tutor Bjorn Lund. It’s a strong look, complemented perfectly by a chocolatey velvet blazer and bow tie. We echoed that classic pairing for Hilton Park Lane, with rich red velvet jackets and butterfly bow ties for the Revery bar team. Wes would approve.

4. Mia Threapleton → Angelica, Leeds (and half the hotel world)

Mia (better known, for now, as Kate Winslet’s daughter) plays Zsa-Zsa’s pipe-smoking, side-eyeing nun daughter. She’s mostly seen in a crisp white shirt dress that means business. You can’t beat clean white tailoring. We went for a similarly sharp, minimal look at Angelica restaurant in Leeds, with white cotton bib shirts from our Readywear range. Saintly levels of crispness. No habit required.

5. Michael Cera’s waistcoat and bow tie → Skylon, London

Minus his staffroom-chic blazer, Michael’s character swaps into a waistcoat and bow tie – equal parts waiter and on-the-run academic. At Skylon, we went classic: fitted waistcoats, classic bow ties and mid-century energy to match the view. If Bjorn ever needs a shift while while dodging assassins, we’ve got him covered.

Wes, if you ever need costume support – we know a few people.
